This portrait of courage under fire celebrates NYC’s first openly transgender firefighter. For Brooke Guinan, fighting fires runs in her blood – both her father and grandfather served in the FDNY. But as a transgender woman, her path to service has not been without obstacles. Transitioning from male to female in what is still an overwhelmingly macho profession proves a challenge for her coworkers and her family, while her boyfriend reckons with the impact of Brooke’s newly public profile on his parents.
Distant Constellation - dir. Shevaun Mizrahi
The film primarily centers around character sketches of a handful of members of a turkish retirement home. No biographical or background information is given about any of the subjects aside from what is presented on camera. The stories include how one woman escaped the Armenian genocide in in Turkey, one man's less than subtle sexual exploits, and a blind photographer coming to terms with his the cancer that is causing his vision to deteriorate. Each story feels intensely personal, with more than a shade of melancholy.

From Mass to the Mountain takes you to eastern Panama, where decades of government corruption and neglect have impoverished the region. But thanks to the tireless efforts of one priest to build infrastructure, protect watersheds, and conserve the rainforest, life is looking up for the locals.
